Prepare Your Home for the Market

When you list your home for sale, you should be ready to show the best version of your home to prospective buyers. Check out these 6 home staging tips to ensure your home is market ready.

6 Tips for Prepping Your Home to Sell

Before investing money into staging your home, speak with your real estate agent. More than anybody, your agent will know what the average buyer wants to see when they walk through your home.

1. Make It Sparkling Clean

The first step to prepping your home is to clean it from top to bottom. Clear-off countertops, dust ceiling fans, clean windows, and move extra items into storage.

The less stuff you can have inside your home, the better. Get a head start and pack up all of your tchotchkes. You can pack up extra clothes, toys, books, dishes, and even furniture to show buyers the important parts of the house. It's also never good if a prospective buyer trips over an unnecessary piece of furniture in a tight hallway.

2. Paint Goes a Looong Way

Paint the house a neutral, light color for buyers to see your home as a fresh canvas for all of their ideas. If your home is already a neutral color, use touch-up paint to erase the nicks and flaws that accumulate over time.

Ask your real estate agent for advice on paint colors. Bright white trim and ceilings with a neutral color may be a safe way to go, but experts in the business will know the best colors to paint your home’s interior.

3. Make the Floors Shine

Do not forget about the floors. Get carpets professionally cleaned and scrub the grout of your tile floors. Let the kitchen floor shine and be free of crumbs or dust buildup.

Focus on the stairs, vacuuming each corner, and treating your stairs as a centerpiece in the home. If there is a problem area, look into repairs or replacements of the flooring in your home.

4. Add Greenery and Color

Use plants and nature to bring color into your home. You don’t have to be a decorator to make your home inviting and esthetically pleasing.

Pops of color in the drapes or pillows are also a great way to give your home a memorable accent. Adding these small touches can bring more interest to your home than you'd think.

5. Curb Appeal Matters

The outside of your home says a lot about how you take care of your property. For example, if the grass is overgrown and the fence or siding is falling, that is a red flag for potential buyers.

Use touch-up paint on the outside of your home. Make sure the yard is free of weeds. Trim the grass to look clean and tidy, including your backyard. Add a welcome mat or decorative door hanging to the front door.

6. Choose an Inviting Smell

Consider the smell of your home. Your home should smell neutral, without any strong smells of paint, food, or perfumes. Air out your house before people come to walk through. You can also light a candle or bake cookies to add a welcoming scent.

When you imagine what a prospective buyer may think walking through your home, take away all the stress and clutter from everyday life and give them a neutral slate. Then they can imagine their belongings inside the house and imagine making their own memories in it for years to come.
